Global Press Journal is looking for an experienced web producer to join our growing D.C.-based team. Part producer and part project manager, this role will manage content on GlobalPressJournal.com, our award-winning publication. From managing the publication schedule to loading and producing stories for a dynamic global audience, this role will also project manage the redesign of the site. We’re looking for someone to work alongside the Creative Director in rethinking how Global Press Journal tells stories to local and global audiences. The successful candidate will be a powerful collaborator, a fearless risk taker and a bold critical thinker. Applicants MUST have newsroom web experience.

Job responsibilities

Curate the stories. Load the website ensuring storytelling opportunities are realized in the layout. Give feedback on headlines, teasers and photos. Curate the homepage and archive pages to ensure robust user experiences that showcase the best of Global Press Journal stories.

Manage the big projects. Project manage the complete redesign of GlobalPressJournal.com, prioritizing both the local-language reader and the English-language reader. Collaborate with the Creative Director, in-house editors and the offsite development team to ensure that deadlines and expectations are met. Create and test innovative new features and think big about the future of how Global Press stories are consumed worldwide.

Be a reader advocate. Create and design high-impact storytelling opportunities online through the lens of Global Press Journal’s six storytelling priorities (autonomy, development, earth, innovation, migration, power). Manage the social media publication calendar to ensure stories are accurately represented and are reaching global audiences. Lead the design and distribution of the weekly newsletter to seize brand loyalty opportunities. Monitor traffic trends across platforms for engagement opportunities.

A producer’s average day will likely include:

Attending team meetings with reporters in GPJ coverage countries

Loading stories into WordPress for publication

Brainstorming creative storytelling opportunities with reporters, editors, illustrators, graphic designers and researchers

Testing and innovating on the latest web developments and user experience updates

Designing Instagram stories or other visually dazzling social media posts to draw readers to the website

Collaborate with the Visuals Editor to curate photo galleries, leverage drone footage or push other visual boundaries

Offer feedback for how stories can improve to better serve the needs of GPJ’s growing readership

You’re experienced. You have 3-5 years of professional newsroom experience, specifically working in digital production. You have professional experience beyond internships.

You are creative. You have a keen eye for design and can dissect GPJ’s unique aesthetic. You have a strong working knowledge of HTML, CSS, the Adobe Creative Suite and other key tools.

You’re organized. You are a systems-level thinker who loves to design and follow processes. You know how to manage your time and are respectful of how you manage your colleagues’ time. You can think big (goals) and work small (tasks) to advance the mission and vision of Global Press everyday.

You’re a self starter. You get things done. No one has to ask you twice. You own your mistakes and you aren’t afraid to fail.
