Our Story
Global Press was founded in 2006 by Cristi Hegranes, a young journalist who once dreamed of becoming a foreign correspondent. But after going overseas on her first assignment, she realized that she was the wrong person to be telling the world’s stories. Instead, Hegranes passed her pen to local women in the community who had the cultural context and the source access to tell accurate, world-changing stories. Nearly 20 years later, that simple decision fueled a movement in international journalism that brought local women journalists to the forefront of the industry.
Together, our network of local women journalists have published more than 10,000 stories, many of which have gone on to change laws, influence reforms, undo harmful global stereotypes and more.
"Local reporters with proximity to events and access to diverse sources tell fuller, more accurate stories—the sort of news consumers have been demanding for years."
Cristi Hegranes, Global Press Founder & CEO
Featuring original interviews with some of the biggest names in journalism, including Nicholas Kristof, Carroll Bogert, Bobby Ghosh, Lauren Williams and Global Press reporters around the world, Byline makes a bold case that international coverage led by local journalists can restore trust in the entire industry.
“Byline is an essential book for anyone who cares about international journalism. Drawing on experience building and running one of the most transformative models for journalism to be found anywhere in the world, Hegranes is uniquely positioned to explain what’s wrong with the current system and, most importantly, how it can genuinely be improved.”
David Bornstein, Co-founder, Solutions Journalism Network
In response to the rise of authoritarianism, threats to press freedom and a deep need to better understand the interconnectedness of our world, Global Press now focuses its coverage on the three most pressing issues of the day — global health, civil liberties and the environment. Now, reporters and reporting fellows from even more global locations are producing investigative and explanatory news coverage for print, online and radio audiences across the globe.
Global Press prioritizes coverage of global health issues to transform understanding of the systems that often determine quality and length of life for people who lack choices in their healthcare.
Global Press prioritizes coverage of the environment in order to transform global understanding of the natural world from the local perspectives of people living in biodiversity hotspots and the most climate-impacted places.
Global Press prioritizes coverage of civil liberties to improve global understanding of the systems (governmental, judicial, economic and others) that determine the freedom, autonomy and agency possible for people and communities.
