FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 1, 2024

WASHINGTON D.C. — Krista Karch, award-winning journalist and former Global Press newsroom leader, returns to the 19-year-old international news organization after a five-year hiatus to lead its new editorial strategy covering critical issues shaping discourse around the globe.

Karch will be leading a team of journalists around the world. She will spearhead impactful journalism from our Reporters-in-Residence based in Uganda, Nepal, Argentina and Zimbabwe. Karch will also work with the organization’s first group of fellows embarking on a two-year fellowship on shifting democracies. The program will see Global Press enter new coverage countries ranging from the Ukraine to El Salvador.

Her decision to return to Global Press is tied to a new operating model that emphasizes interconnected, international coverage of three of the most pressing issues of our time: civil liberties, global health and  the environment.

"Global Press's new direction will continue to emphasize the unique access that our journalists have, while leveraging our ability to identify connections across international borders," Karch says. "I'm thrilled for this opportunity to lead Global Press news coverage into a new era.”

Karch added that Global Press's visionary leadership under CEO and Founder Cristi Hegranes makes this work possible.

"It's always daunting to create something new," Karch says. "The Global Press leadership team is doing that, built on nearly two decades of incredible journalism.”

From 2013 to 2019, Krista was central to the organization’s most impactful and resonant reporting. Now she returns to lead a team of seasoned local journalists who will magnify and question those systems within their own communities which shake the foundations of democracy.

“Krista is a one-of-a-kind leader, thinker and journalist and I am thrilled and honored that she has returned,” Hegranes says. “Her leadership promises to amplify our mission and deliver journalism that shapes the global conversation.
